STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Junior long jumper
Michael Troup (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman sprinter
Anthony Brodie (Bronx, N.Y.) had terrific results in their respective events at the FastTrack National Invitational to highlight a great day of competition for Villanova at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex on Friday. Troup extended his personal best mark in the long jump by 20 centimeters and Brodie tallied his top time this season in the 400 meters. Both moved up on the Wildcats all-time performance list with their results.
Troup measured a long jump of 7.33 meters to finish first out of 43 competitors. He easily bettered the mark of 7.13 meters that he had established outdoors at Princeton last year and set his new personal standard on the very first of his six jumps for the day. Troup recorded four other jumps of 7.09 meters or better in addition to a foul one his third attempt, but it remained his first jump that was enough to secure the first place finish.
The mark of 7.33 meters also put Troup into the BIG EAST lead for the current season. He is one centimeter ahead of Marquette junior Joseph Keys pending the results of competitions this weekend. Troup also lifted himself four spots on Villanova's all-time indoor performance list in the long jump and now stands in fifth place. He also entered the program's overall top-10 list regardless of season and is ninth on that list. Friday's performance is the longest indoor jump by a Wildcats athlete since Elbert Maxwell recorded a jump of 7.43 meters at the 2015 BIG EAST Championships.
Junior
Vincent Sengelmann (Boise, Idaho) also competed in the long jump on Friday night and tallied his top mark of the season with a distance of 6.81 meters. He placed eight overall after finishing atop his flight. It was the first time Sengelmann was competing since the season opener at Navy last month.
Brodie was named the BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week earlier this week and stated a case for a repeat honor after winning the 400 meters on Friday night. He tallied a winning time of 47.66, lowering his top time for the year by more than half a second and surging one spot into second place on the BIG EAST performance list. Brodie also takes over 10
th place on the Villanova all-time indoor performance list after being just outside the top-10 with a mark of 48.22 recorded at Penn State last week.
In his first season of collegiate competition, Brodie leads the BIG EAST in the 200 meters and is second in the 400 meters as of the end of competition around the country late Friday night. He led a quintet of Wildcats athletes who ran the 400 meters at the FastTrack meet. Junior
Richie Bush (Lawnside, N.J.) also crossed the finish line in under 50 seconds (49.19). Juniors
Amir Brock (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) and
Keegan Hughes (Malvern, Pa.) had times of 50.06 and 50.61, respectively, while senior
Dan Powers (Chadds Ford, Pa.) registered a time of 51.37.
Troup and Sengelmann had a busy night which included competing in multiple events. Troup raced in the preliminary heats of the 60 meters and registered a time of 7.21, with redshirt freshman
Dylan Henry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) posting a time of 7.08 in that event. Henry also ran the 200 meters in 22.30 later in the night. Senior
Ike Osuagwu (Wilmington, Del.) competed in the 60 meters and recorded a time of 7.37. Sengelmann tallied a triple jump of 13.25 meters, while sophomore
Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was in action and jumped 14.52 meters.
Villanova had a group of runners in the invitational section of the 5000 meters. Competing as an unattached entry, freshman
Mathias Powell (Mahomet, Ill.) won the race in 14:40.86. Junior
Paul Nichols (Latham, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman
Ben Seiple (Westport, Conn.) recorded personal best times of 14:45.71 and 15:14.24, respectively, while junior
Rob Morro (Media, Pa.) registered a time of 15:00.80.
The redshirt freshman pair of
Patrick Craemer (Upton, Mass.) and
Patrick Spychalski (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) ran in the fastest section of the Mile and recorded nearly identical times. Craemer crossed the finish line in 4:19.35 and Spychalski followed him in 4:19.37. Senior
Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) ran the 3000 meters and notched a first place finish with a winning time of 8:21.78. In the 800 meters, redshirt freshman
Nick Ackerman (Manalapan, N.J.) posted a time of 1:58.16 and junior
Jacob Bonanotte (Barrington, Ill.) had a time of 1:59.36.
Sophomore pole vaulter
Jim Keys (Herndon, Va.) cleared a height of 4.70 meters in his second straight strong outing. He established his personal best mark of 4.76 meters at Penn State last weekend and continued to compete at a high level with another outing in which he cleared the bar at 4.70 meters or higher. His lifetime best prior to last week had been 4.65 meters on multiple occasions.
The final event to finish was the high jump, in which juniors
Jacob Kelly (Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Ryan Tompkins (Farmingdale, N.J.) each cleared the bar at a height of 1.99 meters. They tied for third place in the invitational section of the event, while sophomore
Peter Willis (St. Charles, Ill.) was eighth with a height of 1.89 meters.
