VILLANOVA, Pa. - Thanks to a barrage of first half goals, Villanova made the most of a running clock to take down Lafayette, 16-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Villanova stadium.
The Wildcats had nine different goal scorers, led by
Sami Carey and
Sydney Pappas who had three each, and included defender
Maddy Stoddard with her first career goal.
Cate Gallagher protected the goal in the first half, totaling three saves and not letting a single shot find the back of the net.
Makenzie Fisher was in goal the second half and totaled four saves. Carey tallied the most points with eight total, three goals and five assists while Pappas followed behind her with seven points, three goals and four points.
In the first quater, the 'Cats racked up a six-goal lead that started with a
Jillian Vaught score at the 11:59 mark. She opened a 15-goal run for the 'Cats that lasted three quarters.
Bella Piselli then found the back of the net a short time later with the help of
Ashlyn Hickey. Carey pieced together three consecutive assists on goals for Pappas,
Leslie Iorio and
Sophia Corretjer to help push the Villanova lead out to 5-0. With two minuets left in the quarter, Stoddard got a fast break and, with a quick pass from Pappas, found the back of the net for the first time, helping the 'Cats to a 6-0 lead through the first.
Carey and
Rose Christie had goals less than a minute into the second quarter. Pappas then grabbed two goals back-to-back before Christie extended the lead to 11-0. Corretjer scored once more with 2:24 left in the half, making it a 12-0 Villanova advantage at the break. The Wildcats finished the half with 19 shots, keeping the Leopards to only three.
In the third quarter, Carey scored her second of the game with an assist from Pappas. Piselli netted another goal unassisted before Carey scored another for the 'Cats after
Elena Torres found her open on the crease, making the score 15-0. The Leopards scored two unanswered goals in the last three and a half minutes to cut the Villanova lead to 15-2 heading into the fourth.
Lafayette scored quickly into the fourth quarter to keep its momentum going.
Elle Brady ended the Leopards' run with her first career goal and an assist from
Lauren Redfern. Lafayette cut into the Wildcat lead with two goals down the stretch.
Villanova Stadium will host the Wildcats' next game on Saturday as Columbia comes to town for a 4 p.m. contest.
