PRINCETON, N.J.—Senior distance runner
Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) crossed the finish line in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:14.01 to post the nation's leading mark to this point in the season during competition at the Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Hutchinson was one of several Villanova athletes who posted strong results during the meet at Weaver Stadium, where the Wildcats had a total of 17 athletes competing in 11 different events.
Hutchinson broke 4:15 in the 1500 meters for the second time in her career and was the top collegiate finisher in the seeded section of the event. She and professional runner Ajeé Wilson broke away from the rest of the pack in the race, with Wilson crossing the line in 4:13.75. Hutchinson, whose lifetime best in the 1500 meters is 4:13.71, took over the lead on the collegiate performance list pending the outcomes of other meets around the country this weekend.
Sophomore
Lauren Ryan (South Yarra, Australia) came in fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:26.09, while seniors
Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) and
Ann Campbell (Mission Hills, Kan.) followed across the finish line in 4:27.99 and 4:31.20, respectively. Also competing in the seeded section of the meet was sophomore
Rachel McArthur (Bristow, Va.), who ran in the 800 meters and came in fourth out of 19 competitors with a time of 2:07.35. Earlier in the afternoon,
Kaleigh Hughes (Needham, Mass.) ran in the unseeded section of the 1500 meters and posted a time of 4:45.03 to finish 11
th in a field of 33 runners.
The team's top result in the sprints came from junior
Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.), who was the runner-up in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 54.86. Onque-Shabazz moved up a spot on Villanova's all-time performance list in the 400 meters and now ranks ninth overall and eighth outdoors. Her race on Saturday marked the fastest time by a Wildcats runner for an open 400 meter race since the 2013 outdoor season, and lowered the previous personal best of 55.15 that Onque-Shabazz had only recently established at this year's indoor BIG EAST Championships in late February.
Sophomore sprinter
Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) tied a personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 11.86 and was the runner-up in her race. Elsewhere in the sprint events, junior
Adrianna Letros (North York, Ont.) recorded a time of 1:08.99 in the 400 meter hurdles, and the duo of junior
Ava Coleman (Southington, Conn.) and freshman
Liv Morgan (Bronx, N.Y.) posted times of 15.59 and 15.83 in the preliminary heats of the 100 meter hurdles.
The day was a big one for junior
Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.), who came in second in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 11.86 meters. It is the third straight meet that Donou has improved her personal best mark, a stretch that began with the indoor BIG EAST Championships (11.50m) and continued with the outdoor season opener at the Penn Challenge (11.78m) before Saturday's meet at Princeton. Donou now ranks seventh on the Villanova performance list in the triple jump. Junior
Katie Ciccarone (Freehold, N.J.) also competed in the triple jump and had a mark of 10.74 meters.
Freshman
Ashley Preston (Franklinville, N.J.) tied for a second place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.65 meters, while sophomore
Amanda McNelis (Commack, N.Y.) made it over the bar at a height of 3.50 meters. Junior
Sofia Calabrese (Edwards, Colo.) had a height of 1.60 meters in the high jump to tie for a ninth place finish, while senior
Alex Patrick (Media, Pa.) recorded a distance of 4.90 meters in the long jump.
