NEW YORK, N.Y. – The women's lacrosse team will head to New York, N.Y. on Tuesday, Mar. 19 to face Columbia University at 6 p.m. Villanova is currently 5-4 on the season after suffering a tough overtime loss to Richmond last Saturday. The Columbia Lions are 3-5 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play.
The pair will compete in their second all-time matchup where the Wildcats currently hold a 1-0 record over the Lions after defeating them 16-7 on the road during the 2013 season.
Villanova
Villanova is currently led in points by
Katie Comerford (29),
Ashley Lynch (25),
Devin Hassinger (20) and
Liz Trojan (20). Comerford leads the 'Cats in assists with 19 and has also netted in 10 goals while Hassinger leads the team with 19 goals and has recorded one assist. Second on the team in assists is Lynch who has tallied 14 and contributed 11 goals. Trojan is second on the team in goals with 17 after recording 14 goals in the last four games.
Hassinger also leads the team in draw controls with 59 and now sits at No. 1 all-time in career draw controls with 164.
Grainger Rosati sits behind her this season with 35 draw controls.
Defensively,
Sydney Frank has continued her strong efforts for the 'Cats as a freshman and has caused a team high 14 caused turnovers and has scooped up 13 ground balls. Frank's fellow defenders,
Kelsey Mentzer and
Julia Arrix have also been key factors this season. Mentzer has caused eight turnovers and has collected 15 ground balls while Arrix has recorded seven and 14.
Alexa Moro continues to be the go-to in the goal for Villanova. The freshman goalie leads the team with 87 saves on 230 shots faced for a .486 save percentage. In the last two contests she helped the team go 1-1 and recorded 17 saves.
Columbia
This season Columbia is receiving its offense from two key players, Lindsey Ewertsen and Alexandria Absey. Ewertsen has scored 15 goals and recorded 17 assists for a team high 32 points, she also leads the team with 42 draw controls, 26 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls. Absey is No. 1 on the team with 18 goals this season and one assist for her current season total 19 points.
Both Abby Roberts and Ryan Schlageter have seen time in the net for the Lions. Roberts has seen 300 of the 480 minutes of play and leads her team with 54 saves on 150 shots faced and a save percentage of .482. Adding relief is Schlageter who has stopped 28 shots on 87 shots faced in five games.
Looking Ahead
Following Tuesday's matchup, the Wildcats will have over a week off before they hit the road again on Saturday, Mar. 30. Villanova will travel to Milwaukee, W.I. and face Marquette University at 12 p.m. CT for both team's first BIG EAST Conference game of the season.
