Williamson Records Pair of Victories at FastTrack Meet

Villanova totaled three first place finishes at Friday afternoon’s meet in New York

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Junior sprinter Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) was a double winner and freshman Sanaä Barnes (Keller, Texas) also recorded a first place finish during competition at the FastTrack National Invitational on Friday afternoon.  Williamson won the 60 meters and the invitational section of the 200 meters at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex, while Barnes took first in the high jump for the second time in as many meets to begin her collegiate career.

Times of 7.57 and 7.51 in the 60 meters put Williamson at the front of the field in both the preliminary heats and the final.  She was first out of 82 total competitors in the preliminaries before lowering her time to the winning mark of 7.51 in the final.  Williamson also came in first out of 23 runners in the invitational 200 meters with a time of 24.50.  That moved her up to third on this season's BIG EAST performance list in the 200 meters, while she remains atop the conference in the 60 meters with a season-best time of 7.38 that was recorded last week.

Barnes cleared the bar at 1.80 meters in the high jump and was successful on each of her first three attempts of the day.  The competition opened with the bar set at 1.45 meters, and only 14 of the original 45 competitors remained when the bar was later raised to 1.70 meters.  That is when Barnes came into the competition, and she was one of just four athletes who made it over.  Barnes cleared the bar on her first jump of the day, secured her first place finish when she was the only competitor with a successful attempt at 1.75 meters and then also made it over at 1.80 meters on her first try.

Junior sprinter Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) qualified for the final of the 60 meter hurdles after ranking fifth out of 85 athletes in the preliminary heats.  She was clocked in 8.70 during the preliminaries, then moved up a spot to place fourth in the final in 8.62.  Sophomore teammate Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) narrowly missed advancing to the final, as she was ninth overall in the heats with a time of 8.81.

The trio of Williamson, Burns and Jones all competed in the seeded section of the 200 meters.  In addition to Williamson's first place finish, Burns came in fourth with a time of 24.90 and Jones was 13th in 25.73.  All three narrowly missed their lifetime best marks in their second event of the day.

Among other notable results from the meet, junior Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.) was the runner-up in the seeded section of the 400 meters with a time of 56.20.  Junior Sofia Calabrese (Edwards, Colo.), a multi-event competitor, recorded a personal best time of 26.67 in the 200 meters.  Sophomore Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.) led a trio of Wildcats in the long jump and the triple jump with marks of 5.28 meters and 11.23 meters, respectively.

It was a busy day of competition across the country for Villanova, which had delegations of athletes in action at the FastTrack meet in New York as well as the David Hemery Valentine Invite in Boston and the Husky Classic in Seattle.
