Villanova/Maine Post-Game Notes

Nov. 5, 2016

Recap | Box Score

  • Villanova won for the seventh time in its last eight games and continued to be successful coming off of bye weeks. With the win over Maine, the Wildcats are now 13-3 (.813) in their last 16 games after being idle the previous week.
  • Villanova leads the all-time series with the Black Bears by an 11-9 margin, and has won each of the last four games played at Alfond Stadium. Those four victories have come by an average of 22.8 points, and the Wildcats have won six of eight overall in the series.
  • Villanova led 10-0 at halftime, and has now shut out the opposition in the opening half in four of the last five games. Through nine games this season, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 136-59 before halftime. That includes a 62-14 scoring margin in the first quarter alone.
  • One of the big keys to the game was Villanova's defense in the red zone. Maine drove into the red zone five times but failed to score on any of those possessions. The five red-zone drives ended with three interceptions, a missed field goal and a turnover on downs after a fake field goal was snuffed out by the Wildcats defense. Prior to today's game, Villanova had only stopped its opponents from scoring in the red zone six times on 22 such possessions.
  • Sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk established new career highs with 326 passing yards and 23 completions. He finished the day 23-of-31 through the air and also tied a career high with three passing touchdowns. Bednarczyk registered his first career 300-yard passing game and surpassed his old personal best of 270 yards in a game which had been set at Elon earlier this season (October 1, 2016). Bednarczyk had thrown three touchdown passes in a game on two previous occasions, including in the Elon game.
  • With his 326-yard passing performance against Maine, sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk moved up to 13th place in school history in career passing (2,814 yards). He passed Bill Hatty (1972-73), who threw for 2,647 career yards. Bednarczyk trails Tom Marchese (1993-95) by 169 yards for 12th place in the school record book. Marchese had 2,983 career yards.
  • Zach Bednarczyk needs just four more yards of total offense to tie Clint Park (1995-96) for 10th place in school history. Bednarczyk has 3,649 career yards and ranks 11th in the Villanova record book. Park had 3,653 career yards.
  • Sophomore kicker Gerard Smith connected on field goal attempts of 42 yards and 43 yards in the victory. The longest made field goal of his career prior to the game had been a 39-yarder last season at Albany (October 17, 2015). Smith, who has gone 4-of-5 on field goal tries this season, also recorded his first career game with two made field goals. Villanova had not made two field goals in a game since August 29, 2014 against Syracuse. The last time the Wildcats made two field goals of 40 yards or longer came on September 13, 2008 against Lehigh. On that day, Joe Marcoux was 4-of-4 on field goals, including a pair of attempts from 44 yards.
  • Freshman wide receiver Brandon Chadbourn scored his first career touchdown on a 17-yard reception with just 11 seconds left in the second quarter. He finished the game with two catches for a total of 39 yards.
  • Freshman wide receiver Changa Hodge, who missed the first seven games of the year due to an injury, registered his first career catch when he hauled in a 34-yard pass in the second quarter. Hodge made his season and collegiate debut against Albany two weeks ago.
