Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova men's lacrosse team hosted 13th ranked Penn State University today in NCAA men's lacrosse action. The Wildcats were unable to overcome an early seven-goal deficit and were beaten by the Nittany Lions by a score of 13-7 on the strength of Don Mayerhofer's four goals and four assists. The loss drops the 'Cats 2000 record to 0-2, while Penn State evens its mark at 1-1.
Villanova dug itself a huge hole in the first quarter as the visitors poured in seven unanswered goals to enter the second period ahead 7-0. In the second stanza, the Wildcats finally got things going at 10:41 when senior midfielder Chris Larson scored off of a Jack McTigue pass. Villanova tallied another goal two minutes later when freshman Brian Marks netted his second of the season, thanks in part to an Andrew Bogle assist. Unfortunately for Villanova, Penn State matched the 'Cats two second period goals and took a 9-2 lead into the half.
The third period was a mirror image of the second with the Wildcats scoring the quarters first two goals, and Penn State matching the two scores. After Villanova's Justin Loonie made it 9-3, Bogle got in on the scoring action as he netted an unassisted score. The Wildcats would once again score the periods first two goals in fourth when Bogle tallied his third and fourth goals of the day, with one coming off of a pass from sophomore Justin Marks. Penn State came back to score two more until Larson finished off the game's scoring with an unassisted goal, making the final score 13-7 in favor of the Nittany Lions. The Wildcats next game will be next Saturday, March 11, at 1:00pm at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
