CHESTER, Pa. - Eight members of the Villanova men's and women's track and field team captured individual titles at the Widener Invitational on April 19, 1997, held on the campus of Widener University in Chester, Pa.
On the women's side, Kia Davis (Jr., Chester, Pa.), Janeille Matthews (Jr., Elmont, N.Y.), Lony'e Johnson (Fr., Wilmington, Del.), and Anne Mielnik (Fr., Ephrata, Pa.) were all double winners on the afternoon. Davis ran her fastest time of the outdoor season in the 100m hurdles, posting a time of 14.08 to win that event in addition to the 400m hurdles. Matthews captured first-place finishes in the 100m and the triple jump, running 12.60 in the 100m. Johnson, meanwhile, won the 400m and 800m events, while Mielnik earned an ECAC qualifying mark of 142-08 in the discus throw.
In addition, Chantell Parks (Jr., Sicklerville, N.J.), Katie Blackett (So., Flagstaff, Ariz.), and Sarah Hunt (Fr., Langhorne, Pa.) made strong showings with runner-up finishes in their respective events.
Head coach John Marshall's men's squad was paced by Coulby Dunn (So., Greentown, Pa.) and Jermaine Deans (So., Manchester, Jamaica), who were both individual champions. Dunn ran to a first-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:37.47, the best performance by a Wildcat in the event all season. Dean's leap of 48-09.25 in the triple jump qualifies for the IC4A meet, and was the best effort of the day in the event. Brian Lucas (Jr., Scarborough, Ontario) also put in an impressive performance, finishing second in the the 400m, while Rich Morris (So., Jackson, N.J.) was runner-up in the 800m. Kareem Archer (Jr., Plainfield, N.J.) ran an IC4A-qualifying time of 14.71 in the 110m hurdles to place second, and Steve Miller (Sr., Shelton, Conn.) also earned a runner-up finish in the javelin.
The Wildcats will compete next in the prestigious Penn Relays, held April 24-26, 1997, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
