PHILADELPHIA -- Coulby Dunn (So., Greentown, Pa.) highlighted the Villanova efforts at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational with a first-place finish in the 10k run. The meet was held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Dunn won the 10k in an IC4A qualifying time of 30:58.70, as he lapped the entire field. Also qualifying for the IC4A Outdoor Championships were Stephen Howard (Sr., Sheffield, England) and Steve Mazur (Grad., Blackwood, N.J.) in the 1500m. Howard, who finished seventh in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships, placed second with a time of 3:47.11. Mazur, who was competing in his first track meet since last spring, was impressive as he finished seventh in 3:50.83.
Brian Lucas (Sr., Scarborough, Ontario) turned in a strong race in the 800m as he won the event in 1:53.55. Rich Morris (So., Jackson, N.J.) who has been plagued with several injures throughout the cross country and indoor track seasons, appears to be getting back into racing form as he placed eighth in the 800m in 1:54.90.
Also turning in top-10 finishes for the men were Eric Bind (Owings Mills, Md.), Ryan Payne (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.), Kevin Coyne (Springfield, Va.) and the 4x800m relay team.
Bind was fifth in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:00.66, Payne placed fourth in the 10,000m in 33:09.50, while Coyne was eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 13-11 1/4. The 4x800m relay team of Brock Butler (West Chester, Pa.), Tantino, Mazur and Morris teamed up to finish fifth in 7:54.00.
The Villanova women earned six top-10 finishes on the day. Carmen Douma (Fr., Cambridge, Ontario) finished fifth in the 800m in 2:12.90 and seventh in the 1500m with a time of 4:36.04. Janeille Matthews (Jr., Elmont, N.Y.) was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 37-3 1/2, while Anne Mielnik recoded three top-10 marks. Mielnik was fourth in the javelin (114-2), fifth in the discus (131-11) and seventh in shot put with a throw of 39-10.
The Wildcats will be back in action on April 12, as they host the Villanova Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start with the field events at 11:00 a.m. and the running events to follow at 11:30 a.m.
