Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Villanova softball team fell twice at Queen Invitational Friday, losing to Virginia Tech and Charlotte.
The 'Cats (0-8) started the day with a 7-3 loss to the Hokies (6-1).
Maggie King got her first career start in the contest, taking the loss after pitching five innings.
Virginia Tech got off to an early lead, getting to King for two runs in the top of the second. The Hokies added a third in the top of the third.
A scoreless fourth inning for both teams led to a fifth inning which saw the Hokies plate four runs against King in her last inning of work.
Needing to chip into the deficit, VU responded with a two-run home run by
Lilly St. Jean, the first of her season and 10th of her career.
Carly Zych came on in relief for the remainder of the game, keeping the Hokies off the board for the final two innings. Zych escaped a one-out, two-on jam in the sixth before setting down the Hokies in order in the seventh.
Katie Reed picked up her first career RBI in the bottom of the seventh, driving in
Madison Ostrowski on a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game to its final final score of 7-3.
Kat Gallant started the 'Cats second game of the day, going an inning and a third and taking the loss in the contest.
The 'Cats loaded the bases on three walks to begin the game, but 49ers (5-2) starter Brooke Bowling was able to escape unscathed.
Charlotte brought in the game's first runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
The 49ers broke open the game in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to force Gallant out of the circle.
Lexi Kobryn entered in relief for her first appearance of the weekend, giving up three more runs before the 'Cats retired the side.
VU loaded the bases again in the top of the third, but were once again denied by Bowling, who got out of a jam for the second time.
Charlotte would go on to add three more runs in the final two innings of the contest, winning an abbreviated game.

Villanova continues the Queen Invitational Saturday, once again facing off against Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. before taking on Michigan State at 12:30 p.m. to close out the day.
