WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The distance trio of junior
Marco Langon (Raritan, N.J.), senior
Devon Comber (Ambler, Pa.) and redshirt freshman
Bailey Habler (Melbourne, Australia) combined to make history for Villanova during competition at the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday night. Langon won the fast section of the event, Comber broke 3:40 for the first time in his career and Habler became the 49
th member of the Wildcats hallowed sub-four minute mile club. Not bad for a night's work as their performances highlighted a strong evening of competition at Kentner Stadium.
Langon paced a field of 54 runners in the invite section of the 1500 meters with a winning time of 3:37.25. It is the seventh-fastest time in school history in a race run during the collegiate outdoor season, but merely a blip on the radar for Langon who became the second-fastest 1500 meters runner in NCAA history (behind only teammate
Liam Murphy) less than a month ago when he was clocked in 3:33.38 at North Carolina State.
Earlier heats of the 1500 meters may have gone out faster than the fourth and fastest heat of the invite section did, but Langon has quickly become one of the nation's elite closers during his breakout junior campaign. He came in under 54 seconds (53.86) on the bell lap of Friday's race, more than a second faster than any other runner in the field. Langon was 1.2 seconds ahead of the runner-up in the field.
The efforts by Comber and Habler were just as impressive and the Wildcats now boast a 1-5 sweep of the top performers in the BIG EAST so far this season. Comber broke 3:40 for the first time in his career and lowered his PR by more than 1.5 seconds while posting a mark of 3:39.70. That sits third in the BIG EAST behind Murphy and Langon and would make Villanova the only school in the country to have three runners go under 3:40 this season, depending on the results of other meets this weekend.
Habler lowered his PR in the 1500 meters by more than 5.5 seconds to join the Wildcats list of sub-four minute milers. He crossed the line in 3:42.15 on Friday night, just five hundredths of a second below the threshold of 3:42.20 which is the metric equivalent of breaking the four minute barrier in the mile. Habler is the 23
rd member of the Villanova sub-four club who has been coached by
Marcus O'Sullivan, and in a source of pride for the Wildcats program he is the fifth Australian since 2011 to join this exclusive list of the top middle distance runners in program history.
The quartet of Murphy, Langon, Comber and Habler can all expect to be in the top 30 of the East Region descending order list when it is formally updated after this weekend's competitions.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, redshirt freshman
CJ Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) recorded a personal best time of 3:47.05 in the unseeded section of the 1500 meters. He lowered his PR by more than seven seconds and was briefly in sixth place on the BIG EAST performance list before his own teammates past him later in the night.
Sophomore middle distance runner
Dan Watcke (Hinsdale, Ill.) ran his first 800 meter race since the indoor NCAA Championships just over a month ago. He recorded a time of 1:47.95 to take over the No. 3 spot in the BIG EAST and post a top 25 time in the East. Watcke was a first team All-American in the 800 meters with a fifth place national finish indoors.
The final event of the night for Villanova was the 5000 meters in which redshirt freshman
Nick Sullivan (Middletown, N.J.) recorded a time of 14:53.18.
