VILLANOVA, Pa. – Women's Water Polo cruised to victory over Salem University in front of many former Wildcat alumni to secure their second win on Alumni Day.
Villanova got out to a hot start on both sides of the ball, scoring the first nine goals of the game helped by hat tricks coming from
Layla Canales and
Ella Mattocks. The junior also drew two exclusions.
The Wildcats exploded for nine goals in the second quarter, a season high for goals in a quarter.
They finished the first half up 14-3, setting their season high for most goals in a half.
Coco Jones scored on two penalty attempts, for the sixth and seventh penalty goals of the day for the 'Cats between their two games.
11 different Wildcats found the back of the net in this game, including four multiple goal scorers.
Sara Withers had two assists, moving her just a bit closer to the 100-career assist mark, as she sits at 98.
Both
Gracin Kerry and
Rachel Stephens split time between the pipes, tallying four saves each in their respective halves. Kerry also added two assists.
Abby Moffatt and Katarina Melián both tallied their first career goals in this match.
Every active Wildcat appeared in this game, with all entering by the third quarter, after some only participated in the final frame of games so far this season.
UP NEXT
Conference play starts next week in the MAAC, as the Wildcats will head down to Lexington, Va., to take on Mount St. Mary's, Siena, and Virginia Military Institute at VMI.
