Reagan McGivern Earns BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week After Career-Best Weekend

The freshman picks up her second league major award following 10 blocks in victory over Marquette

NEW YORK -- For the second straight week, Villanova volleyball has a conference major weekly award winner as freshman middle Reagan McGivern was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

McGivern joins Campbell McKinnon (Sept. 15) as Wildcats to be named DPOW this year with this being the second weekly award of McGivern's career (after a Freshman of the Week nod on Sept. 29) and the fourth POW nod the 'Cats have been given this season.

It's the first time since 1991 that Villanova has earned more than three Player of the Week honors in a single year, and the first since 2017 that the Wildcats have even earned multiple Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season. It's also just VU's sixth ever Defensive Player of the Week, which was an accolade started in 2017 when the league split awards into separate offensive and defensive laurels.

McGivern contributed over one and a half blocks per set in a 1-1 weekend for the Wildcats, totaling 14 blocks and 18 kills as VU split the slate. The freshman hit .438 in the pair of matches with a total of 25 points, being the lone Wildcat with double digit blocks on the weekend.

The Kansas native, who's top five in the BIG EAST for both blocks and hitting percentage, posted a team-high four blocks and a career-best 10 kills on a match-high .350 clip against DePaul, then accounted for eight kills and a league season-high 10 blocks as Villanova toppled Marquette for the first time since 2017.

McGivern and the Wildcats head to the Midwest for the final multi-match road trip of the year, visiting both Xavier and Butler this weekend.
