PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Villanova recorded strong performances in the sprint events at the Penn Invitational held at Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Parker Turner (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted times of 10.78 in the 100 meters and 21.94 in the 200 meters to highlight the day's results, while sophomore
Sal Barretta (Whitestone, N.Y.) recorded the fifth-best time in the BIG EAST this season in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal best mark of 56.18.
Turner finished fifth in the 100 meters in his outdoor season debut and was followed by junior
Connor Dunning (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman
Derrick Smith (New Orleans, La.) who posted times of 11.07 and 11.32, respectively. Later in the afternoon, Turner came in sixth in the 200 meters ahead of Dunning (22.27), freshman
Imevar Justice (Summit, N.J.) and Smith (23.09). Turner was a BIG EAST scorer indoors in the 200 meters after finishing fourth in his first collegiate conference championship.
Four athletes competed for the Wildcats in the 400 meters. The group was led by freshman
Ethan Walls (Ridgefield, Conn.) who recorded a time of 49.54 and finished sixth out of 21 competitors in the event. Sophomore
Ronan O'Neill (Wilmette, Ill.) and freshman
Matthew Griffin (Whippany, N.J.) had nearly identical times of 49.86 and 49.90 to finish eighth and ninth overall, while senior
William Seijas (Shrewsbury, N.J.) posted a time of 51.19.
The quartet of 400 meter runners also teamed up to run the 4x400 meter relay which concluded the meet. Seijas led off the race and was followed by Walls, O'Neill and Griffin as Villanova posted a first place finish with a time of 3:18.10. O'Neill had a split of 48.69 on the third leg of the race and Griffin anchored with a split of 49.18 on the final lap.
Barretta recorded a personal best time of 56.18 in the 400 meter hurdles and posted a seventh place finish, while O'Neill registered a time of 57.09 in his first collegiate race in the event. In the other track races,
Christopher Weeks (Virginia Beach, Va.) competed in the 800 meters (2:00.88) and senior
Cole Walker (Chadds Ford, Pa.) recorded a time of 4:06.13 in the 1500 meters.
Sophomore thrower
Liam Anderson (Lebanon, N.J.) and freshman
Jonathan Evans (Springfield, Va.) each competed in two events on Saturday. Anderson tallied marks of 13.20 meters in the shot put and 35.34 meters in the hammer, while Evans measured distances of 38.23 meters in the discus and 29.81 meters in the hammer.
Sophomore long jumpers
Daelyn Nwaobasi (Nashville, Tenn.) and
Sanjay Persaud (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) registered marks of 6.28 meters and 5.84 meters.
