NEW YORK—Sophomore distance runner
Lydia Olivere (Wilmington, Del.) competed in the invitational section of the Mile on Saturday afternoon as Villanova rounded out three days of competition at the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge. Olivere posted a time of 4:50.08 in the Mile, which was one of seven events on the Wildcats schedule for the day.
In a field that included mostly professional runners, Olivere came in ninth in her second indoor race of the season. Her time was less than half a second off a personal best mark and she was also clocked with an en route 1500 meters time of 4:31.20. Former Villanova standout Angel Piccirillo was among the professional runners in the field of 13 athletes.
Later in the afternoon, the freshman duo of
Anna Helwigh (Soborg, Denmark) and
Brynne Sumner (Canton, Ga.) ran in the college section of the Mile. Helwigh came in sixth overall in a field of 36 competitors and posted a time of 4:53.01 in her indoor collegiate debut. Sumner finished 10
th with a time of 4:55.57. The other middle distance event on Saturday's docket at The Armory was the 800 meters, in which freshman
Madison Martinez (Gahanna, Ohio) recorded a time of 2:11.54.
Senior sprinters
Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) and
Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.) paced the Wildcats in the 200 meters and the 400 meters, respectively. Williamson came in ninth out of 74 runners in the 200 meters and led a contingent of five Villanova athletes with a time of 24.39. Onque-Shabazz recorded a time of 56.39 to come in 15
th in the 400 meters.
The other finishers for the Wildcats in the 200 meters included sophomore
Jada Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica), freshman
Alexis Martin (Gaithersburg, Md.), junior
Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) and senior
Adrianna Letros (York, Ont.). Thomas posted a time of 25.51, Martin crossed the line with a new PR of 25.60, Jones recorded a mark of 25.84 and Letros also set a new personal best with a time of 26.57. It is the second PR in the 200 meters in as many weeks for Letros.
Villanova finished the day by recording a time of 3:52.22 in the 4x400 meter relay. Martin led off the race, followed by Martinez, Onque-Shabazz and Letros.
Sophomore thrower
Emily Galvin (Pitman, N.J.) competed in the weight throw and recorded a personal best mark of 12.64 meters, besting her previous top mark set last season by 1.8 meters. In the triple jump, seniors
Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.) and
Katie Ciccarone (Freehold, N.J.) posted marks of 11.38 meters and 10.64 meters, respectively.
The team returns to action next week when the Wildcats host the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
