BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—
Freshman high jumper Sanaä Barnes (Keller, Texas) became the first Villanova woman to be an indoor All-American in a field event with a fourth place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon.  Barnes also broke the school record in the high jump for the second time this season when she cleared the bar at a height of 1.84 meters at the Birmingham Crossplex.  Her performance earned the Wildcats five points in the team standings.

Later on Saturday evening, senior distance runner Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) placed 13th in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:18.91.  It was the second race in less than 24 hours for Hutchinson, who anchored Villanova to a fourth place finish in the distance medley relay on Friday night.

The fourth place finishes in both the DMR and the high jump enabled the Wildcats to finish with 10 team points overall.  It is the fourth time in the last 10 years that Villanova has scored 10 or more points at the indoor NCAA Championships, and the team's 21st place finish this season is the program's best since 2014.

Barnes made it over the bar at each of the first four heights in the high jump, and by the time the bar moved to 1.84 meters was guaranteed of no worse than a first team All-America finish.  The competition opened at a height of 1.71 meters and then moved to 1.76 and 1.81, with eight athletes in the field of 16 making it over at 1.81 meters.  Barnes only had two total misses at the first three heights, as she cleared 1.71 meters and 1.81 meters on her first try.

The field was whittled down further to four competitors at 1.84 meters, with Barnes clearing the bar on her third and final attempt.  Three of the four remaining athletes, including Barnes, were eliminated with three misses at 1.87 meters.  Her fourth place finish makes her the Wildcats first women's All-American either indoors or outdoors in the high jump.

Barnes' list of accomplishments from the indoor season is remarkable.  She broke a school record which had stood for more than 36 years in her collegiate debut at the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge in January, and in her third competition of the season two weeks ago won the individual BIG EAST title to contribute to Villanova winning the team championship.  Barnes now adds All-America honors to an already impressive ledger.

The collegiate newcomer competed at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland over the summer, and is also a two-sport standout for the Wildcats who had a strong freshman season for the volleyball team during the fall.

Hutchinson took the track for the final individual event of the competition on Saturday evening and raced to a second team All-American finish in the 3000 meters.  She went out with the lead at the start of the race and wound up pacing the field for the first 2000 meters.  Three of her first nine laps around the banked 200 meter track were the fastest in the field of 15 competitors.

With her performances in the distance medley relay and the 3000 meters this weekend, Hutchinson will now be a six-time All-American overall during her collegiate career.  She was previously a second team All-American indoors in the Mile as a sophomore two years ago.  So far during the 2018-19 academic year, Hutchinson has been an All-American during cross country as well as in the two races she ran this weekend.  She is now one of 28 women in school history to earn at list six career All-America honors.
