Wildcats Suffer 36-35 Loss to Stony Brook as Time Expires

Three different Villanova players threw touchdown passes in annual Homecoming game

VILLANOVA, Pa.—A successful 22-yard field goal as time expired completed a late 15-point comeback by Stony Brook (5-3, 2-2 CAA Football) and No. 5 Villanova (6-2, 3-2) was dealt a 36-35 loss in its annual Homecoming game at Villanova Stadium early Saturday evening.  The visiting Seawolves scored three times in the final 4:45 to outlast the Wildcats in a game where both teams appeared to have seized momentum on a number of occasions.

There were a combined 987 yards of total offense between the teams, including Villanova amassing 509 yards and building an 18-point halftime lead.  Junior quarterback Daniel Smith (Leesburg, Va.) threw for 249 yards and a touchdown, while a pair of true freshman skill players in wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (Wayne, N.J.) and running back TD Ayo-Durojaiye (Damascus. Md.) each threw for a touchdown on first-half trick plays.  Hayek and Smith combined for a 68-yard touchdown late in the first quarter for the Wildcats first points of the game on a play that wound up with Smith being credited with his first career catch.

Smith was 17-of-29 on the day and the three Villanova passers combined for 341 yards through the air.  Junior wide receiver Changa Hodge (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) had six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, with a catch early in the second half making him the 35th player in program history to reach 1,000 career receiving yards.  Hayek and senior wide receiver Zac Kerxton (Haymarket, Va.) tallied four receptions apiece.  Freshman running back DeeWil Barlee (Upper Darby, Pa.) rushed for a season-high 131 yards and a touchdown, with his two-yard scamper on fourth down stretching the Wildcats lead to 35-20 with 9:14 left in the game.

Stony Brook began the eventual game-winning comeback on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tyquell Fields to Shawn Harris with 4:45 to play, then scored again on a one-yard run by Fields which made the score 35-33 with 1:32 left.  A two-point conversion attempt by the Seawolves resulted in a dropped pass in the end zone, while an ensuing on-side kick by Stony Brook rolled out of bounds at midfield.

The final Wildcats possession of the night began at the Seawolves 45-yard line with 1:26 remaining and Stony Brook having just one timeout.  Consecutive sacks cost Villanova 22 yards and led to a timeout with 1:15 to play, while the Wildcats eventually had to punt the ball back to the Seawolves with the clock showing 21 seconds.

Fields completed passes of 19 yards and 40 yards on two rushed offensive plays, with Stony Brook spiking the ball after each of those completions.  The clock was stopped with three seconds to play and Nick Courtney made the 22-yard field goal to end the game.  Fields wound up 21-of-37 for 320 yards with one passing touchdown and two rushing scores.

He put the Seawolves ahead less than five minutes into the game when his 15-yard run opened the scoring with 10:15 remaining in the opening quarter.  That scoring drive began at Villanova's 44-yard line after a blocked punt gave Stony Brook advantageous field position.

After the Wildcats punted on their first two possessions, they scored touchdowns on their next four scoring drives.  On first down from Villanova's own 32-yard line late in the first quarter Smith handed off to Hayek, who then tossed the ball back to Smith who raced down the sideline just in bounds for a 68-yard score.  Ayo-Durojaiye scored his first career touchdown on a 24-yard run early in the second period, while a 27-yard field goal by Courtyney with 10:41 left before halftime left the score 14-10 in the Wildcats favor.

Villanova needed just three plays to go 83 yards for its next touchdown, with Hayek rushing for 12 yards and Smith throwing a 50-yard pass to junior tight end Todd Summers (Murrysville, Pa.) before Hayek hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass.  Ayo-Durojaiye got in on the act again just before the intermission on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Hodge with 1:27 to go before the end of the half.

Momentum swung towards the Seawolves at the start of the second half however, as the Wildcats fumbled the kickoff to open the third quarter and gave the ball back to Stony Brook at Villanova's 24-yard line.  Courtney kicked a 25-yard field goal less than 90 seconds later to make the score 28-13, while a 10-yard run by Ty Son Lawton at the 9:48 mark of the period trimmed the Wildcats lead to 28-20.

Villanova went 80 yards on 12 plays in the fourth quarter to get the margin back to two possessions, or three as it wound up being in the final minutes.  Barlee's two-yard touchdown run with 9:14 left was his second fourth-quarter, fourth-down score in the last three games.

Junior linebacker Forrest Rhyne (Waynesboro, Pa.) had a team-high 10 tackles while recording his third straight game with double figures in total stops.  Senior Drew Wiley (Pennington, N.J.) was one of three other players who made eight tackles in the game, and among them for Wiley were a career-high four tackles for loss and the team's only sack of the game.  Junior safety Jaquan Amos (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded his third interception of the season and the seventh of his career.

Villanova will be back on the road next weekend, for the sixth time in nine weeks this season, to face New Hampshire next Saturday at 1 p.m.  It will be the Wildcats first time playing in Durham in six years.
