Staten Island, N.Y. - Terrific results in the middle distance events highlighted what was a strong day overall for Villanova at its second home meet of the season. The team recorded seven top-three finishes at the Villanova Open on Friday afternoon and had several athletes record new personal best times in their respective events at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex.
Sophomores Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) set a tone for the Wildcats with big finishes in the 800 meters. They came in second and third, respectively, in a field of 44 runners while posting times of 1:50.34 and 1:51.66. The pair also ran the middle legs of the 4x400 meter relay and helped Villanova come in third out of 13 teams in the relay with a time of 3:19.32.
Five runners competed for the Wildcats in the Mile, with four coming out of their race with new top times. Redshirt freshman Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) was the runner-up out of 39 competitors with a time of 4:09.31, while Andrew Marston (Wayne, Pa.) also had a personal best while tying for fifth place in 4:12.46. Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) came in ninth in 4:14.41 in his return from an injury, while redshirt freshman Paul Power (Phoenixville, Pa.) and senior Colin O'Mara (Little Rock, Ark.) clocked personal best times of 4:19.14 and 4:22.83.
Villanova had a trio of runners finish consecutively from fourth through sixth places in the 1000 meters. Sophomore Zach Swenson (Boulder, Colo.) led the way in 2:29.82 and was followed by redshirt freshmen Lucas Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Louis Vazquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.). All three registered personal bests in the event, with Arrivo and Vazquez crossing the finish line in 2:30.72 and 2:35.11, respectively.
Freshmen Konrad Bayer (Naperville, Ill.) and Dan Powers (Chadds Ford, Pa.) bookended the 4x400 meter relay, and each also ran in the 400 meters individually. Senior Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats in the 400 meters with an eighth place finish and a time of 49.89, while Bayer (50.81) and Powers (51.68) followed.
Notable in the field events for the Wildcats were the pole vault and the shot put. Freshman Thomas Conboy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the pole vault and cleared the bar at a personal-best height of 4.50 meters. Senior Kolby Koeck (Altoona, Pa.) came in third with a height of 4.35 meters. In the shot put, sophomore Henry Sise (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) came in third out of 23 competitors with the best throw of his collegiate career. He measured a distance of 15.93 meters and moved up a spot to ninth on Villanova's all-time indoor performance list in the shot put. Senior Dan Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) also scored in the shot put (14.35m) with an eighth place finish.
Villanova is back at the Ocean Breeze venue next Saturday for its final home meet of the season. Several top teams in the region will compete in the Villanova Invitational.
