  • Villanova defeated Lafayette for the first time in five tries, although the most recent of the previous four games in the all-time series took place 96 years ago. The teams met four times between 1898 and 1920, with the Leopards winning all four games by a combined score of 77-3. Prior to tonight's contest, the Wildcats had never scored a touchdown versus Lafayette.
  • Villanova has scored four defensive touchdowns in its first four games this season after not scoring any defensive touchdowns in 11 games last season. The four defensive touchdowns this year are the most in a single-season in at least the last 17 seasons. The last time the Wildcats had at least four non-offensive touchdowns was in 2012, when the team had three interception returns for scores and one punt return touchdown.
  • Since the start of the 2011 season, Villanova is 26-3 (.897) when it scores 30 or more points.
  • Senior defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon had 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The last time Villanova scored a defensive touchdown on the first play from scrimmage was on December 5, 2009 against New Hampshire when John Dempsey had a 4-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. In each of these games, the time of the touchdown was 14:45.

  • The last time Villanova had two defensive touchdowns in a game was on November 17, 2012 when the Wildcats had two interception returns for touchdowns in a 41-10 win at Delaware.
  • Tanoh Kpassagnon has three career fumble recoveries, including two in the last two games. He was credited with a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on one play in last week's win over Towson. The fumble recovery led to a Villanova touchdown on the ensuing drive and the Wildcats scored 14 points off turnovers in a 40-21 victory.
  • Sophomore kicker Gerard Smith made a 37-yard field goal with 13:55 remaining in the second quarter. It was the first field goal made by Villanova since the ninth game last season, when Smith hit a 22-yard field goal with 6:54 to play in a game against Rhode Island on November 7, 2015. Since that field goal versus Rhode Island, the Wildcats had gone 63 offensive possessions and a span of 322:59 of clock time since their last field goal. However, there was only one missed field goal in that stretch, which came in the second game this season against Lehigh.
  • Sophomore safety Julian Williams made his first career start and registered a career-high six tackles in addition to blocking a punt in the third quarter. It was the first time Villanova blocked a punt since October 25, 2014 against Morgan State (Pat Williams).
  • Senior punter John Hinchen had seven punts for an average of 36.7 yards, including a long punt of 51 yards and two attempts which were downed inside the 20-yard line. Hinchen now has nine punts downed inside the 20-yard line on 23 attempts this season. That matches his total on 40 attempts from all of last season.
