Villanova/Lehigh Post-Game Notes

Sept. 10, 2016

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Villanova head coach Andy Talley became the 22nd college football coach all-time, regardless of division, to reach 250 career wins. Talley is now 250-152-2 (.621) in his 39th year of coaching, including 222-134-1 (.623) in his 32nd season with the Wildcats. Talley is the active career wins leader among all FBS and FCS coaches, and is one of five current coaches at all levels of the game with over 200 wins at his current school.
  • Villanova won its home opener for the fifth straight year and the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Three of those nine victories (2008, 2009, 2016) have come against Lehigh. The teams met tonight for the first time since 2010 and the Wildcats extended their advantage in the all-time series to 8-5.
  • Villanova finished with 396 rushing yards for the night, its highest single-game rushing total since a 410-yard performance against Northeastern on September 26, 2009. The performance against the Mountain Hawks marked the 20th time since the start of the 2009 season that the Wildcats have recorded at least 300 rushing yards in a contest.
  • On the flip side, Villanova had only 56 passing yards on 13 attempts for the night. Sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk was 6-of-13 through the air in the game. It was the first time since a 28-13 win over Fordham on September 8, 2012 that the Wildcats had fewer than 100 passing yards. Villanova finished with 78 passing yards (8-of-17) in the Fordham game four years ago. The last time the Wildcats had fewer than 56 passing yards in a contest was on December 5, 2009 against New Hampshire (44 yards in a 46-7 win).
  • Sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk has led three career game-winning drives with Villanova trailing in the fourth quarter. His collegiate debut came against Delaware last season on September 19, 2015 when he entered the game in the fourth quarter with the Wildcats trailing 21-14 and completed a pair of touchdown drives for an eventual 28-21 victory. Later in the season, Villanova trailed No. 9 Richmond, 20-14, with under a minute to play when Bednarczyk threw a game-winning touchdown pass with 41 seconds left.
  • Senior running back Javon White had a career-high 155 rushing yards on 23 carries. He surpassed his previous career best performance of 143 yards which he had accomplished last season on September 12, 2015 at Fordham. In all, his effort tonight was the 41st time in school history that a Villanova player rushed for at least 150 yards in a game. Of those 41 occasions, 14 have come in the last 10 years.
  • Senior linebacker Austin Calitro recorded his third career double-digit tackle game. He had 10 total tackles in the game, with five of those coming in the fourth quarter.
  • Junior linebacker Ed Shockley had a career-high 10 tackles and junior safety Rasaan Stewart had a career-high nine total stops to go along with his first career interception.
