Villanova/Saint Francis Post-Game Notes

Nov. 26, 2016

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Villanova has now won nine of its last 13 playoff games dating back to the 2008 season. With the win over Saint Francis, the Wildcats are now 12-10 (.545) all-time in the Division I Football Championship. This is the 12th appearance all-time in the FCS playoffs for Villanova, including its sixth postseason appearance in the last nine years.
  • Saturday's win continued the Wildcats success at Villanova Stadium, where the team is 5-1 this season. Villanova is 129-49 (.725) at its on-campus home during the Andy Talley era, including a 37-12 (.755) record over the last nine seasons. During that same time period (since 2008), the Wildcats have gone 9-2 in home postseason games.
  • After losing its opening playoff game in 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1996, Villanova has won at least one postseason contest in seven of its last eight appearances in the Division I Football Championship. The lone exception was in 2012 when the Wildcats lost to Stony Brook in an opening round game.
  • Villanova built a 31-7 lead at halftime in Saturday's game, which was nothing new for the team. In 12 games this season, the Wildcats are outscoring the opposition by a 201-83 margin in the first half. That includes an 86-28 scoring edge just in the first quarter of games.
  • Since the start of the 2011 season, Villanova is 30-3 (.909) when it scores at least 30 points in a game. The win over the Red Flash marked the sixth time this season that the Wildcats have put at least 30 points on the board.
  • Villanova has held seven of its 12 opponents to fewer than 300 total yards this season, including in each of the last three games. In their 12 games on the year, the Wildcats own a +10.4 scoring margin (25.8-15.4) and have averaged 383.6 yards of total offense while giving up just 265.0 yards to the opposition.
  • Junior tight end Ryan Bell had five receptions for a career-high 110 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He is the first Villanova tight end with a 100-yard game since Matt Sherry had 105 yards on seven catches against William & Mary on October 6, 2007. Bell scored two touchdowns in a game for the third time this season and the second straight game. He also registered a pair of scores at Maine on November 5 and in last week's regular season finale at Delaware. Bell has 29 receptions for 379 yards and a team-high seven receiving touchdowns this season.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Jarrett McClenton scored his first touchdown of the season on a 53-yard reception in the second quarter. McClenton finished the game with 115 all-purpose yards, including three catches for 65 yards and eight rushes for 50 yards. His rushing attempts and yardage both tied career highs. McClenton has 27 receptions for 302 yards on the year. He has scored three career touchdowns, with his most recent prior to Saturday's game coming last season against Richmond on November 14, 2015.
  • Three different Villanova players had over 100 all-purpose yards in the game. Junior running back Matt Gudzak had a team-high 117 yards (62 rushing, 55 receiving), sophomore wide receiver Jarrett McClenton had 115 yards (65 receiving, 50 rushing) and junior tight end Ryan Bell had 110 receiving yards.
  • Junior running back Matt Gudzak has surpassed 50 yards as both a rusher and a receiver in the last two games. He has 311 all-purpose yards in all in the last two contests, including 183 rushing yards, 109 receiving yards and a 19-yard kickoff return.
  • Senior defensive ends Tanoh Kpassagnon and Bryan Osei, along with sophomore linebacker Jeff Steeb, had career highs in sacks in the win. Villanova finished with six sacks total for the day. Kpassagnon had 2.5 sacks, Osei registered two solo sacks and Steeb finished with 1.5 sacks. The six team sacks are the second-highest total of the season for the Wildcats, who previously had nine against Albany on October 22.
  • Junior safety Rob Rolle recorded his team-high seventh interception of the season, which he returned for 29 yards just before halftime. Rolle had a school record 100-yard interception return earlier this season and has now accumulated 160 return yards on his seven picks. Rolle leads CAA Football in interceptions for the season.
