UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - It was a race that was reminiscent of so many that he has run, and the outcome was just as familiar as senior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) won the individual title at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional for the third time in his career on Friday afternoon. Tiernan paced a field of 157 runners at the Blue and White Golf Course on the Penn State campus and won the 10,000 meter race with a time of 30:33.
Tiernan finished with a 10-second margin of victory and became the first men's runner ever to win the Mid-Atlantic Regional three times. He won the race as a freshman in 2013 and added a second individual title last season. He has notched first place finishes in 12 of his 20 career cross country starts, including in both of the races he has run this season.
Villanova placed three runners in the top 13 overall and finished eighth in the team standings at the regional meet. Redshirt freshmen Andrew Marston (Wayne, Pa.) and Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) finished fourth (30:53) and 13th (31:08), respectively. Each of the Wildcats top three runners earned All-Region honors for placing in the top 25 individually. Tiernan and Marston are in line to earn individual spots at the NCAA Championships when official team bids and individual sections are announced on Saturday afternoon.
The duo of Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) and Colin O'Mara (Little Rock, Ark.), both in their sophomore seasons of cross country eligibility, finished with times of 32:25 and 32:59, respectively, and were Villanova's fourth and fifth scoring runners. Redshirt freshman Paul Power (Phoenixville, Pa.) crossed the finish line in 33:25.
Tiernan raced comfortably at the front of the pack for a good part of the race, and was in the lead at the halfway point of the course. He wasn't challenged as he approached the finish line and his latest historic achievement. Tiernan became the first men's runner in BIG EAST history to win four career conference titles last month.
He is now set to return to the NCAA Championships, where he has been an All-American in each of the past three seasons. Tiernan is one of only two Wildcats who have earned All-America honors in cross country three times. Marston, who redshirted the season as a true freshman last year, will make his first career appearance at a national meet.
