Villanova/Rhode Island Post-Game Notes

Oct. 8, 2016

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Villanova tallied its first shutout since a 37-0 win at Albany last season on October 17, 2015. During the Andy Talley era, the Wildcats have recorded 15 shutouts and have only gotten shut out three times.
  • During its five-game winning streak, Villanova has outscored the opposition by a tally of 174-63 and has averaged a margin of victory of 22.2 points. The last time the Wildcats won five straight games was during the 2014 season when the team ran off seven straight wins. That seven-game win streak, like the current five-game streak, began after a season-opening loss to an ACC opponent (Syracuse in 2014, Pittsburgh this season).
  • Villanova has won its last two games, against Elon and Rhode Island, by a combined score of 77-7. In these two victories, the Wildcats have racked up 1,020 yards of total offense and 55 first downs. Their two opponents have managed just 233 yards of offense and 12 first downs in the two games. In the first quarters of these two contests, Villanova has had an advantage in total yards of 431-19. For the season, the Wildcats are outscoring their opponents by a 55-7 margin in the first quarter.
  • Rhode Island finished the game with 103 yards of total offense and just 28 rushing yards. The total offense is the lowest allowed by the Wildcats since the Rams had only 88 yards in a 45-0 win by Villanova on November 9, 2013. The rushing total for Rhode Island was the lowest allowed by the Wildcats since Fordham had just 18 rushing yards on September 6, 2014.
  • Villanova leads the all-time series against Rhode Island by a 19-3 margin, and has won the past five meetings by an average of 29.0 points. In three of the last five head-to-head matchups, the Wildcats have held the Rams without a touchdown. Those occasions include a 45-0 win at Rhode Island on November 9, 2013; a 24-3 victory on the road last season on November 7, 2015 and today's 35-0 outcome.
  • Villanova had 317 rushing yards in the win over Rhode Island. By comparison, the Wildcats have allowed a total of just 195 rushing yards in the last three games combined. Villanova has limited its opponents to fewer than 100 yards on the ground in three straight games, as well as four times in six outings this season. For the year, the Wildcats are allowing only 92.3 rushing yards per contest. They are the only CAA Football team holding opponents to under 100 yards per game.
  • Villanova held both Elon last week and Rhode Island this week to six first downs. The last time the Wildcats gave up fewer than 10 first downs in consecutive games came against Lehigh and Towson on September 11 and 18, 2010.
  • Rhode Island's Isaiah Hill tipped a punt by Villanova senior John Hinchen in the second quarter. It was the first time a Wildcats opponent blocked a punt since the final game of the 2014 season when Sam Houston State blocked a Hinchen punt in an FCS playoff game.
