MORGANTOWN, W.V. - 12th-ranked West Virginia (5-1) topped Villanova (0-5) 8-0 on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, W.V. Four goals in each half decided the contest as the Mountaineers pulled away for the win.
West Virginia notched three scores in the opening 10 minutes of action and added the final score of the first half in the 18th minute to put WVU ahead 4-0. Nia Gordon, Ashley Lawrence and Michaela Abam were credited with goals as Kailey Utley assisted on the opening three tallies.
Coming out of intermission, the Mountaineers added to the scoreboard with an additional two goals from Abam to increase their lead to 6-0. WVU's Kayla Saager closed the contest with the final two scores of the match in the 84th and 85th minutes, respectively, to finish the contest at 8-0 in favor of the hosts.
Villanova goalkeepers Emma Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Emily Harris (Derry, N.H.) combined for six saves in the loss. Freshman Kayla Hughes (Hershey, Pa.) registered one shot on goal for the contest.
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, Sept. 11th when they host Yale for their 2015 home opener. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at Higgins Soccer Complex.
