PITTSBURGH, Pa. - An early first half goal gave Pittsburgh momentum as they tallied a 2-0 victory over Villanova on Friday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa.
With the loss, Villanova moves to 0-4 on the season while Pittsburgh improves to 3-1-1.
The Panthers registered the early score in the 4th minute when Jarena Harmon finished to the far post off an assist from Taylor Pryce just 3:54 into the game. Despite the early setback, the Wildcats regained composure and held steady defensively as the stanza came to a close.
Coming out of intermission, Pitt continued to attack in the Villanova defensive third and notched their second score of the game in the 49th minute to pull ahead for the 2-0 lead. Pryce beat Villanova sophomore keeper Emily Harris (Derry, N.H.) high for what would be the final score of the contest.
The Wildcats were led by junior Katie Martin's (Dallas, Texas) two shots on goal for the match while freshman Kayla Hughes (Hershey, Pa.) added three strikes in 68 minutes of action. Defensively, Harris and junior Emma Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined for five saves in the loss while Pitt's Taylor Francis tallied seven stops for the win.
Villanova will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6th when they travel to Morgantown, W.V. to take on the 12th-ranked Mountaineers. Game time is slated for 1pm.
