VILLANOVA, Pa. - In a close match where both teams saw excellent scoring opportunities, it was Yale (3-2) who pulled out a 1-0 win over Villanova (0-6) at Higgins Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon. The contest marked the Wildcats home opener after starting the season with five-straight road games.

The tiebreaker in the 79th minute determined the contest when Yale found the game-winning goal off a corner kick. Fallon Sheridan's cross to the near post was found by Michelle Alozie who headed the ball into a grouping of players. Sofia Griff was in the right place at the right time when her deflection towards goal found the back of the net for the score.

The Wildcats had a golden opportunity in the first stanza when sophomore Amanda Vocelka (Atlanta, Ga.) went one-on-one with a Bulldog defender deep in the box. Yale goalkeeper Rachel Ames came off her line for the tackle, but was flagged for a flagrant foul as the Wildcats were awarded their first penalty kick of the season in the 43rd minute. Reanna Marino's (Massapequa, N.Y.) shot missed wide right as the score remained 0-0 heading into intermission.

Maintaining their intensity after the Yale goal in the second half, Villanova had chances to even the game but couldn't connect for the tying score. Seniors Christina Camassa (Freehold, N.J.) and Michelle Wiese (Syracuse, N.Y.) each took shots towards net but were placed wide right and high of the posts as time ran out on the VU comeback.

The Wildcats were led offensively by Camassa, Marino and Vocelka who each registered one shot on goal for the contest. Junior goalkeeper Emma Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied four saves in the loss while Yale's Rachel Ames made three stops in the victory.

Villanova will return to action in just two short days when they host another Ivy-League foe in Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 13th. Game time is slated for 10 a.m. at Higgins Soccer Complex.
