VILLANOVA, Pa. - Three goals scored in similar fashion helped the visiting DePaul Blue Demons register a 3-0 win over Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex.
On a beautiful fall day it was the visitors who bested Villanova on the Wildcats Bone Cancer Awareness Day held in honor of Patrick Wiese, older brother of Villanova women's soccer senior Michelle Weise (Syracuse, N.Y.).
With the win, DePaul improves to 11-2-2 overall and 5-0 to remain undefeated in BIG EAST action while the Wildcats fell to 1-13 and 0-5 in league.
DePaul got off to a quick start and had chances on net early. In the 18th minute, Abby Reed gave the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead off touches from Elise Wyatt and Franny Cerny from a cross into the box.
The Wildcats had opportunities to equalize the score and had their best look at goal in the 38th minute off a Hayley Wilson (Leonardtown, Md.) corner kick. Wilson served the ball to the middle of the box where it found the head of sophomore Emily Kuefler (Stow, Mass.), who got a fantastic look at the near post forcing DPU goalkeeper Alejandria Godinez to make a diving save to preserve the lead.
The score would hold at 1-0 heading into intermission.
The Blue Demons continued to pressure in the second stanza and took the 2-0 lead in the 79th minute from Lucy Edwards as she tapped in a deflected ball on the goal line. Just over six minutes later, DePaul registered the final goal of the contest from Madeline Frick at the 85:06 mark. Frick touched in a ball from Elise Wyatt for the score.
Defensively, Villanova's Emma Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied four saves in the loss while Kuefler also made an excellent defensive save in the 79th minute guarding the post. DePaul's Godinez registered one save for the win.
Villanova will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17th when they host the visiting Xavier Musketeers. Game time is slated for noon and will be followed by the Villanova men's soccer team also hosting Xavier at 3 p.m.
