VILLANOVA, Pa. - Five unanswered goals on a cold and rainy afternoon bolstered Georgetown's performance as the Hoyas tallied a 5-1 win over Villanova on Thursday at Higgins Soccer Complex. The weather played a critical role in the match as both sides struggled with maintaining possession on the slick turf.
Georgetown improves to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in conference while Villanova falls to 1-10 and 0-2 in league play following today's match. Both sides will be back in action on Sunday for the continuation of BIG EAST play.
The rain was hard and consistent and both teams had to alter their playing styles to fit the conditions of the field. The Hoyas found their footing in the 29th minute and registered the first goal of the contest when Grace Damaska put in a loose ball in front of the net. Teammate Rachel Corboz followed with the Hoyas second goal of the afternoon just five minutes later when she connected on a penalty kick in the 34th minute to increase the Georgetown lead at 2-0 heading into intermission.
Villanova continued to fight but the Hoyas offensive pressure remained consistent following halftime. GU's Grace Damaska tallied her second goal of the game when she took a shot on net that deflected off Villanova defense to increase the Georgetown lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute.
Georgetown found the back of the net in similar styles for their final two goals of the match when Taylor Pak and Crystal Thomas both finished far post to put the Hoyas up 5-0 scoring at the 64:08 and 73:31 marks.
The Wildcats finalized the contest in the 79th minute when senior Christina Camassa's (Freehold, N.J.) shot to the far post from 16 yards out put Villanova on the scoreboard. The goal would be the final of the match to finish the game at 5-1.
Villanova was led by two shots each from freshman Kayla Hughes (Hershey, Pa.) and Camassa while Georgetown's Taylor Pak tallied five. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Emily Harris (Derry, N.H.) made five stops in the loss while Hoya goalkeeper Emma Newins tallied three for the win.
Villanova will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4th when they travel to Creighton to take on the Blue Jays in Omaha, Neb. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
