Final Stats
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville (10-4 overall, 3-2 BIG EAST) took charge on its home turf in the first half and went on to post a 16-4 victory over Villanova (5-7 overall, 1-4 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST game played here today.
Liz Lovejoy scored four goals and added an assist for Louisville while Bergan Foley added four goals for the Cardinals. Senior Carly Miller paced the Wildcats with a pair of goals.
Emily Dashiell opened the scoring for the Cardinals at 25:06 with an unassisted goal. Miller then pulled the Wildcats even with a goal at 18:03 off a feed from Maria Bowman to tie the contest at one. Louisville's Foley soon gave the Cardinals the lead for good at 15:03 with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1.
Louisville then outscored the Wildcats 7-0 over the final 15 minutes of the first half to build a 9-1 lead at intermission. Lovejoy tallied three goals in that run for the Cardinals while Katie Oliverio added two.
Villanova was hoping to duplicate its effort in the second half on Friday, when it rallied from a 9-3 deficit at Cincinnati to post an 11-10 triumph. But Foley scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to push the margin to 11-1.
Miller picked up her second goal of the day at 22:12 off an assist from junior Justine Donodeo to narrow the gap to 11-2. But the Cardinals answered with another successful run of scoring over the next 19 minutes, featuring five unanswered goals to push the advantage to 16-2.
Villanova freshmen Ali Brandenburg and Katie Collopy completed the day's scoring with unassisted goals in the final 1:15 to make the final count 16-4.
Louisville owned a 39-12 advantage in shots on the day and a 24-12 edge in ground balls. Kim Wisniewski picked up three ground balls for VU while Monica Negron accumulated five for the Cards.
Sophomore Amanda Hirschfeld made the start in goal for Villanova and finished with eight saves in 43:18 of action. Senior Maggie Langan went the rest of the way and made a pair of saves. Ashley Herbst made all four of the Cardinals' saves and was credited with the victory in net.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday night at Villanova Stadium in their final non-conference duel of the campaign. Lafayette will be in town for a contest that gets underway at 7:00 p.m..
