VILLANOVA, Pa. - No. 5/3 Loyola of Maryland (13-0 overall, 3-0 BIG EAST) recorded 10 of the game's first 12 goals before halftime and went on to post a 16-6 victory over Villanova (4-6 overall, 0-3 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST women's lacrosse game played here on Sunday.
Junior Justine Donodeo scored two goals for Villanova while seniors Rachel Lasda and Carly Miller and sophomore Shannon Lane added one apiece. Sophomore Maria Bowman contributed a goal and an assist for the `Cats.
Marlee Paton scored four goals for Loyola while Mary Heneberry added two goals and two assists for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds came north from Baltimore with an unblemished record and the Wildcats were looking to halt their streak. But Loyola grabbed the upper hand in the game's opening minutes with when Abby Rehfuss (assist) and Grace Gavin (goal) teamed up for the first score of the day 1:16 into the contest. Heneberry's unassisted goal gave Loyola a 2-0 lead before an unassisted goal from junior Donodeo cut the Wildcats' deficit in half with 22:43 left in the first half.
Two Loyola goals scored within 58 seconds of each other made the count 4-1 in favor of Loyola with 21:00 to go. Gavin and Rehfuss teamed up again for a goal at 17:02 to extend the lead to 5-1 and that was followed by goals from Joanna Dalton and Heneberry that pushed the count to 7-1.
Lasda got one back for Villanova when tallied a goal with 13:20 left before intermission before Loyola scored the last three goals of the half to make the count 10-2 at the break.
The Wildcats scored twice early in the second half to narrow the gap to 10-4. Bowman found Shannon Lane parked in front of the net at 27:55 and Lane converted the pass into a goal. Bowman then picked up an unassisted goal exactly three minutes later for VU.
A pair of goals by Paton in a 1:44 span early in the half pushed the Loyola lead to 12-4. Kelly Quinlan then scored off a free position attempt at 16:26 to give the Greyhounds a 13-4 edge.
Donodeo and Miller got the Wildcats final two goals of the afternoon. The final score was 16-6 in favor of Loyola.
Villanova resumes BIG EAST action on Friday when it visits Cincinnati before heading to Louisville for a game Sunday.
