PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Saint Joseph's (4-2) scored five goals in the game's first 10:16 minutes and went on to a 12-2 victory over Villanova (2-3) on Tuesday evening at Finnesey Field. Senior Stevie McFadden (Reisterstown, Md.) had a goal and an assist in the losing effort for the Wildcats.
The Hawks opened the scoring on a goal from Lindsey-Kate McCool and led 5-1 after Jenna Martino scored with 19:44 remaining in the opening period. During the opening stretch by Saint Joseph's, McFadden scored her first goal of the season at the 23:20 mark to get Villanova on the board.
The McFadden goal pulled the Wildcats to within 3-1 but the Hawks led 7-1 at halftime and stretched the lead to 10-1 before Villanova got back on the board with 9:39 to play in the game. McFadden dished a feed to freshman Rachael Ponge (Fayetteville, N.Y.), who scored her second goal of the season.
Saint Joseph's shot advantage in the game was a modest 22-14 considering the margin in the scoring column, but the Hawks controlled the game by winning 12-of-16 draw controls and forcing the Wildcats into 21 turnovers. Saint Joseph's was successful on 12-of-13 clearing attempts, compared to 11-of-22 for Villanova.
Freshman Maggie Langan (Potomac, Md.) split time in goal for the first time this season, playing the first 20:24 and allowing seven goals with two saves. Senior Lauren Latchford (Morristown, N.J.) played the final 32:37 and made four saves while allowing four goals.
Martino, Abby Renninger and Christina Colangelo all scored three goals for the Hawks and Suzy Herlihy had eight saves in goal.
The Wildcats have played three straight games on the road and now return home for their next contest to host Louisville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
