VILLANOVA, PA.--- On Sunday, Sept. 3, at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the Villanova University women's soccer team shut out the visiting Manhattan Jaspers, 5-0, as the Wildcats got four goals and four assists from their bench. The victory was Villanova's second straight and improved its record to 2-1-0 on the season. The Jaspers fall to 0-2-0 with Sunday's loss.
The Wildcats scored the game's first goal at the 27:12 mark of the first half as sophomore Julie Battista found freshman Jenessa Jeltema on the right side of the net. Jeltema beat Manhattan goalkeeper Jean Marie Gilbert from 10 yards out to give Villanova a 1-0 lead.
With less than five minutes remaining before intermission, the Wildcats struck again. Junior Meaghan Frawley scored her first collegiate goal at the 40:24 mark off assists from Kelly Stewart and Jeltema to increase Villanova's lead to 2-0 at the half.
Just 15 minutes into the second stanza, the Wildcats padded the margin to three goals. Battista fed the ball to Jeltema, who headed it towards the right side of the net. Sophomore Kristin Dunst gained control of the ball and scored her first goal of the year to make it a 3-0 game.
At the 79:52 mark, sophomore Kristin Borchard made a beautiful pass to freshman Elizabeth Dauble on the right of the net and Dauble headed it past Gilbert for the first goal of her Wildcat career. With less than three minutes left in regulation, Villanova put the finishing touches on a 5-0 victory as junior Angela Scialdone tapped in a pass from Dauble.
Wildcat goalkeepers Janel Schillig and Chrissy Dolan combined on the shutout for Villanova. Schillig played the first 70 minutes and made two saves, while Dolan made one save in her first collegiate action.
In the loss, Gilbert made 13 saves for Manhattan to set a new MAAC Conference record.
Villanova will resume play on Wednesday, Sept. 6, traveling to UMBC to play the Retrievers at 4:00 p.m.
