MALIBU, CALIF.--- On Sunday, Sept. 17, in Malibu, Calif., the Villanova University women's soccer team had its five-game win streak snapped by Pepperdine University, as the Waves scored three goals in a 15-minute span in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory. With the loss, the Wildcats' record fell to 5-2-0 on the season, while Pepperdine improved to 5-1-1 with Sunday's win.
The Waves scored just 4:22 into the opening half, as forward Lacey Ubaldi knocked in her own rebound to give Pepperdine an early 1-0 lead. Just 12:47 later, the Waves extended their lead to 2-0 as Tasha Spangler scored off an assist from Kate Desmond. Pepperdine would score for the third time in less than 15 minutes, when Desmond found the net after receiving a feed from Ubaldi.
Villanova goalkeeper Janel Schillig kept the `Cats in the game with numerous diving stops in the first half. Schillig saved six shots in the opening half, as Villanova went into intermission down 3-0. The Waves outshot the Wildcats 11-1 in the first half.
Villanova began the second half strong, but was unable to find the net despite several good scoring opportunities. Julie Battista hit the top crossbar early in the half, and the Wildcats had their would-be first goal waved off on a Pepperdine foul.
Despite evening the shot total considerably in the second stanza, Villanova fell to Pepperdine 3-0, as Waves' goalkeepers Lindsey Brouillette and Teresa Montana combined on the shutout. Taking the loss for the Wildcats was Schillig, who finished the contest with six saves. Freshman goalie Chrissy Dolan came in for Villanova in the second half and made four saves in the final 25 minutes.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, hosting Connecticut at 3:00 p.m.
