PHILADELPHIA, PA.--- On Wednesday, April 12, in Philadelphia, the Villanova men's lacrosse team won for the seventh time in the last eight games, coming back from a four-goal second quarter deficit to defeat the University of Pennsylvania, 15-14, in double overtime. The Wildcats improve to 7-3 with the victory, while the Quakers fall to 5-6.
Down 8-4 in the second quarter, Villanova scored three consecutive times to end the half, cutting the Penn lead to 8-7 at intermission. In the third quarter, the Wildcat offense resumed its stellar play, scoring four straight goals and six out of the first seven to start the second half, as Villanova pulled out to a 13-9 lead. Eric Dauer scored three goals during the Wildcats' second and third quarter runs.
With Penn trailing 13-10 in the fourth, the Quakers went on a run of their own, scoring four fourth quarter goals including one by Todd Minerley with 28 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 14-14 and send the contest into overtime.
With both teams unable to put the ball in the net during the first extra session, the game went into a second overtime stilled tied at 14-14. With 1:53 to go in the second extra frame, Dauer struck again drilling a shot past Penn goalie Ryan Kelly to give Villanova the 15-15 victory.
Villanova got five goals from Dauer and also two goals apiece by Tom Hourican, Andrew Bogle and Chris Larson. Wildcat goalie Matt Wilk had 20 saves on the evening on 51 Quaker shots.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Saturday, April 15, traveling to St. Joseph's to take on the Hawks at 1:00 p.m.
