Wildcats Fall To Minutemen, 38-17

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Richard Lucero passed for three touchdowns and Marcel Shipp ran for two as Massachusetts beat Villanova 38-17 Saturday.

Massachusetts (6-3, 4-2 Atlantic 10) scored on all but one of its first-half possessions on its way to a 31-3 halftime lead.

Shipp scored on runs of 9 and 3 yards and Lucero threw touchdown passes of 23 yards to Eric Bross and 27 yards to Peter Cariello as UMass built its halftime advantage

Lucero hit DeShon Hardy with a 33-yard score early in the fourth quarter, extending the UMass lead to 38-3.

Shipp rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries, while Lucero was 13 for 19 with 208 yards passing.

Villanova (5-4, 3-3) scored twice in the fourth quarter, as Scott Lukash scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 5-yard pass to Brian White.

Lukash was 18 for 32 for 182 yards, but threw three interceptions.

The UMass defense held Villanova's Brian Westbrook, the leading rusher in the conference, to 52 yards on 13 carries.

The UMass offense gained 404 total yards, compared to 250 for Villanova.
