VILLANOVA, PA.--- Hosting Bucknell University on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in wet, sloppy conditions at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the Villanova University women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 second half deficit to defeat the Bison 2-1 in double overtime on a goal by sophomore Quinn Sellers. The Wildcats went over the .500 mark with the victory, and stand at 9-8-0 with two games remaining. Bucknell fell to 7-6-1 overall with Wednesday's loss.
The Bison dominated the first half of play, out-shooting Villanova by an 8-3 margin. At the 21:18 mark of the first half, Bucknell scored the game's first goal off of a corner kick as Ali Chandler headed the ball to Savannah Rennels, who beat Wildcat goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan. Due in part to the fine play of Dolan in net, Villanova was able to escape the first half of play trailing by only one goal.
Still trailing by a 1-0 margin in the 60th minute of play, the Wildcats were finally able to get on the scoreboard. Taking a pass from freshman forward Janessa Jeltema, junior Jessica Painchaud beat Bucknell keeper Laurie Purse with a shot from 10 yards out that found the right corner of the net.
The opposing defenses buckled down in the remainder of regulation, sending the game in a first overtime period knotted at 1-1. In the first overtime session, both goalkeepers made one save to send the game into a second overtime.
With the second overtime already half way in the books, the Villanova offense made its move. Taking the ball on the right side of the field at the top of the box, Painchaud found Sellers with a perfectly placed cross at the 113:44 mark. Sellers responded by knocking the ball into the right side of the net past Purse to give the Wildcats a 2-1 double overtime victory.
Dolan got the victory in goal for Villanova to improve to 2-0. She saved a career-best nine shots in the win to give her 21 on the season. Purse took the loss for the Bison, despite making five saves.
The Wildcats will wind down their home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 21, hosting St. Francis College at 3:00 p.m. Saturday will feature pre-game "Senior Day" festivities, honoring Villanova seniors Justina Smith and Kelly Stewart.
