VILLANOVA, PA.--- On Friday the 13th at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the Villanova University women's soccer team was defeated by University of Miami, as the Hurricanes scored two first half goals en route to a 2-1 victory. The loss was the Wildcats' eighth of the season and dropped their overall record to 8-8-0. Miami ended a five-game losing streak with the win, improving to 7-8-0 overall on the year.
Just over eight minutes into the first half of play, the Hurricanes scored the game's first goal as midfielder Jordan Sims lifted a shot from 35 yards out just over the outreached arms of Villanova goalkeeper Janel Schillig to give the `Canes a 1-0 lead. Still clinging to a 1-0 advantage in the 35th minute, the Hurricanes added to the lead. Forward Jennifer Sanchez fed the ball to Caryn Blood at the top of the box, and Blood beat Schillif from 10 yard away with a shot into the lower right corner of the net to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0 with time winding down in the second half, the Wildcat offense looked to get on track. Junior forward Jessica Painchaud took a shot from point blank range, which was sent back by Hurricane keeper Elizabeth Swinson who made a diving save to her right. Villanova senior forward Kelly Stewart got the rebound and scored her first goal of the season beating Swinson, who was on the ground following her diving save of Painchaud's shot. That was as close as the Wildcats would get, as Miami went on for the 2-1 victory.
Swinson was tremendous in net for the Hurricanes, saving a game-high eight shots to pick up her seventh win of the season. Taking the loss in goal for the Wildcats despite a three-save effort was Schillig, who falls to 7-8-0 on the year.
Villanova will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, Oct. 18, playing host to Bucknell University at 3:00 p.m.
