SYRACUSE, N.Y. - On Feb. 20-21, the Villanova men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Syracuse, N.Y. to compete in the 1999 Big East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University. In the women's meet, Villanova posted a fourth place finish with a total of 84.5 points. Pittsburgh won the title with 119 points, followed by Miami with 110.5 and Notre Dame with 100.
Carrie Tollefson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) had a strong meet for the Wildcats finishing second in the mile run in 4:46.05 and third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:35.67. Villanova was well represented in the 3,000 meters, as Kristine Jost (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) was fifth in 9:37.45, Kristen Nicolini (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) placed sixth with a time of 9:38.05 and Sarah Vance Goodman (Fr., Asheville, N.C.) ran 9:40.61 to finish eighth. Vance Goodman also competed in the 5,000 meters where she ran a strong race to finish second with a time of 16:25.01. Also, in the mile, Carmen Douma (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) was clocked in 5:02.31 and tallied an eighth place finish.
The Wildcats were impressive in the 60 meter hurdles, as Charmaine Walker (So., Plainfield, N.J.) finished second with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 8.17, while Sherese Price (Fr., Pleasantville, N.J.) finished third in 8.45. In the 500 meter dash, Lony'e Johnson (Jr., Wilmington, Del.) qualified for the finals and finished seventh in a time of 1:15.50.
Led by Marlena Robinson (So., Rochester, N.Y.) and Sarah Hunt (Jr., Langhorne, Pa.) Villanova scored well in the field events. Robinson turned in a third place effort in the long jump with a mark of 19'2.75 to go with a fourth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 39'8.75, while Hunt threw 50'08.00 to earn fourth place in the weight throw. Melinda Boykin (Jr., Bridgeton, N.J.) was right behind Hunt in sixth position with a mark of 48'10.00. Boykin also took part in the shot put and placed fifth with a throw of 44'2.5.
In the pole vault competition, Keely Fallon (Fr., Edgewater, Md.) finished seventh.
On the men's side, Villanova registered a 10th place finish in the team standings with 34 points. Georgetown won the event with 166.50 points, easily outdistancing Notre Dame who was second with 101 points.
Highlighting the meet for the Wildcat men were Jermaine Deans (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica) and Scott Tantino (Jr., North wales, Pa.). Deans recorded a leap of 23'8.75 to earn third place in the long jump, while Tantino ran well in the 3,000 meters to finish third in 8:21.54. Coulby Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa.) was four spots behind Tantino in seventh position with a time of 8:27.76. Also, in the distance events, Dean Smith (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) was clocked in 4:14.82 in the mile and placed fifth.
Competing in his first Big East Championship meet, freshman Antoine Johnson (Fr., Tuckahoe, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 60 meter high hurdles in a time of 8.08. Kevin Coyne (Sr., Springfield, Va.) had a fine performance in the pole vault, as he cleared 15'3.00 to earn the sixth position.
