Douma and Tollefson Pace Wildcats

Three individuals led by juniors Carmen Douma (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) and Leashia Rahr (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) along with senior Carrie Tollefson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) led the Villanova women to a fourth place finish at the New York Sports Museum Collegiate Invitational held at the Armory Track & Field Center on January 16, 1999.

Seton Hall captured the women's meet with 97 points followed by Ohio State with 90 points, Washington with 89 points and Villanova in fourth place with 62 points.

Running strong throughout, Tollefson captured the 3,000 meter run in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:25.41. In the mile run, Douma won the race in a time of 4:51.69. Rahr earned first place honors in the 400m run in a time of 56.14.

The Villanova women scored well in the field events as well. In the triple jump, sophomore Marlena Robinson (So., Rochester, N.Y.) finished second with a jump of 11.93m, while Keely Fallon (Fr., Edgewater, Md.) won the pole vault with a leap of 2.75. Fallon was the only individual to make the qualifying standard. Melinda Boykin (Jr., Maple Glen, Pa.) earned a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.18, while Sarah Hunt (Jr., Langhorne, Pa.) placed sixth in the 20 lb. weight throw with a mark of 13.94.

In the 60m hurdles, rookie Sherese Price (Fr., Pleasantville, N.J.) was clocked in a time of 8.85 which was good enough for sixth place.

On the men's side, the Wildcats tallied a seventh place finish in the team standings with 34 points. The University of Washington won the men's meet with 122 points.

Villanova's top individual performance was turned in by Antoine Johnson (Fr., Tuckahoe, N.Y.) who registered a second place finish in the 60m hurdles in 8.12. In the distance events, Brock Butler (Sr., west Chester, Pa.) ran 4:13.71 to place fourth, while Coulby Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa.) was fifth in the 3,000m run in a time of 8:31.12. Butler's time was an IC4A qualifying mark. Also, in the 3,000, Wildcat freshman Eric Reese (Fr., Dushore, Pa.) ran to an eighth place finish in 8:36.22.

Mark Blattner (Fr., Phoenixville, Pa.) competed in both the 35 lb weight throw and shot put, where he was fourth and eighth respectively. He had a mark of 12.33 in the weight throw and 13.23 in the shot.

The men's DMR team of Dean Smith (Jr., Baltimore, Md.), Shaun Stanton (So., Bronx, N.Y.), Michael Bosacco (Sr., Wallingford, Pa.) and Scott Tantino (Jr., North Wales, Pa.) finished third in an IC4A qualifying time of 10:06.77.
