VILLANOVA, Pa. - On Sunday, Nov. 14, in the ECAC Tournament Championship Game played at Yale University, the No. 2 seeded Villanova University women's soccer team defeated the No. 4 seed St. John's Red Storm, 1-0, to take its first ever ECAC title. With the victory, the Wildcats set a new Villanova school record for victories in a season with 14, ending the 1999 campaign with a mark of 14-8. The 'Cats broke the record set by the 1987 Wildcat women's soccer squad which recorded a 13-6-2 record. The Red Storm closed out the season with a 10-6-3 mark.
The game went into the half scoreless and remained that way until the 58:00 mark when sophomore midfielder Jessica Painchaud took a pass from freshman Stephanie Martell and netted the contest's only goal. Villanova sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig was tremendous down the stretch and finished the game with eight saves for her eighth shutout of the season. In addition, she finished the year with 180 saves breaking the school record for saves in a season previously held by Jeanne Hennessy who ended the 1997 campaign with 178 stops.
Seniors Lauren Sellers, Kathy Minnich and Beth McCaffery wound down their senior seasons in fine fashion. Sellers was named the ECAC Tournament Most Valuable playing, as she finished the tournament's two contests with one goal and one assist. She led the team in scoring in 1999 with 29 points on 10 goals and nine assists. Minnich and McCaffery were outstanding as well, as each played key roles in two straight Wildcat shutouts.
