On Friday, Oct. 29, in Fairfield, Conn., the Villanova University women's soccer team lost to Fairfield University, 3-1, in its 1999 regular season finale. With the loss, the Wildcats' record falls to 12-7-0 overall on the season. The Stags of Fairfield improve to 12-3-2 with the victory.
Just 8:36 into the opening half, Villanova got on the board on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jessica Painchaud. Painchaud beat Fairfield goalkeeper Anne Lyons to give Villanova an early 1-0 lead.
At the 20:31 mark of the first half, the Stags evened the game on an unassisted goal off a direct kick by Pam Cluff. As the clocked ticked down to 15:00 minutes remaining until intermission, Fairfield took its first lead on an Abby Allen goal, assisted by Meredith McGowan. The Stags would increase their lead to 3-1, just 6:14 later, on Cluff's second goal of the first half. Assisting on Fairfield's third goal were Kyle McClintock and Julie Ann Forman.
The Wildcats managed eight second-half shots on the Fairfield defense, but could not get the ball past Lyons, as the Stags went on for the 3-1 victory. Lyons got the win in net for Fairfield, saving one shot. Taking the loss for Villanova was sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig, who stopped four shots in defeat.
The Wildcats will now begin postseason play on Tuesday, Nov. 2, as they host Boston College in the opening round of the Big East Tournament, at the Villanova Soccer Stadium at 2:00 p.m. This will be the first-ever home conference tournament game for the Villanova women's soccer team.
