Villanova Dominates on Senior Day, Blanks Lehigh 4-0

Oct. 24, 1999

Villanova, Pa.--- On senior day at the Villanova Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 24, the Villanova University women's soccer team shutout the visiting Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 4-0, behind two goals from senior forward Lauren Sellers (Yardley, Pa./ The Peddie School). With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 12-6 overall on the season, while Lehigh drops to 6-8-1.

Just 1:35 into the opening half, Sellers took a shot from point blank range that was deflected to the right of the net by Lehigh goalkeeper Jami Bisetti. Villanova freshman Kristin Dunst (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee H.S.) got the rebound off the deflection and netted her sixth goal of the season to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.

Villanova dominated the first half of play outshooting the Mountain Hawks 13-2. Bisetti stopped 11 Wildcat shots after the Dunst goal, however, to keep Lehigh within 1-0 at intermission. A stingy Villanova defense led by senior Beth McCaffery (Feasterville, Pa./ Archbishop Wood) kept the Mountain Hawk offense nearly invisible in the opening half, as Lehigh could manage only two shots on Wildcat sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee H.S.).

It didn't take the Villanova offense long to extend its lead in the second half on new Lehigh goalie Marissa Williams. At the 55:58 mark, Dunst found Sellers on the left side of the goal. Sellers headed in her first score of the day and eighth of the year, off a Kelly Stewart (Wyncote, Pa./ Cheltenham) assist, to extend the `Cats' lead to 2-0.

Holding a commanding 2-0 lead at the 68:00 mark, senior Kathy Minnich (Wilton, Conn./ Wilton H.S.) took a feed from freshman Julie Battista (Marchfield, Mass./ Sacred Heart H.S.), and stuck a shot from 10-yards out past Williams into the left side of the net to extend the Villanova lead to 3-0. With only 3:34 left in the game, Sellers put the game away with her second goal of contest to give the Wildcats a 4-0 win. Assisting on the Sellers' goal was freshman Kristin Borchard (Franklin, Mass./ Mt. St. Charles H.S.).

Getting the shutout in goal for Villanova was Schillig, who saved three shots on the day. Schillig now has six shutouts and 140 saves on the season. Coming in at the 75:40 mark for the `Cats was sophomore Susan Lubbers (Emmaus, Pa./ Emmaus H.S.), who blanked the Mountain Hawks for the remaining 14:20. Taking the loss in goal for Lehigh was starter Jami Bisetti who saved 11 shots, but was replaced at the half by Williams.

The seniors ruled the day for the Wildcats. Sellers finished the contest with two goals to give her nine for the season, while Minnich netted her fourth of the year. On defense, McCaffery helped hold Lehigh to five shots, as the Mountain Hawks were outshot by Villanova 29-5.

The Wildcats will wrap the regular season in Fairfield, Conn., on Friday, Oct. 29, playing the Fairfield University Stags at 6:00 p.m.
