Villanova Surprised By Providence, 1-0

In Big East Conference women's soccer action on Friday, Oct. 15, in Providence, R.I., Villanova University lost its second 1-0 heartbreaker in the past week, as the 'Cats fell 1-0 to Providence College. The loss drops the Wildcats' record to 11-5-0 overall, while the Friars improve to 5-8-0 on the season.

Just 2:50 into regulation, Providence's Kyle McCauley took a pass from Melissa Crowley and blasted a shot from the left side past Villanova sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Schillig and Providence goalie Shayna Ross each saved one shot in the first half, as the Friars went into intermission with a one-goal advantage.

The Wildcats managed 11 shots in the contest's second half, but could not get the ball past Ross as Providence held on for the 1-0 victory. Ross had five more saves after intermission, giving her six for the game as she recorded the shutout for the Friars.

Taking the loss in net for Villanova was Schillig, who finished the game with four saves. She now has 128 saves in 1999, and has held her opponents to one goal or less in 13 of the Wildcats' 16 games.

Villanova will resume play on Sunday, Oct. 17, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face the Boston College Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
